Rideshare helps you saves money on gas and tollsRidesharing reduces fuel costsThe average fuel-efficient vehicle in the United States averages less than 25 miles per gallon on the highway. Regular gasoline today costs on average of $3.96 per gallon. At this rate, a 250 mile road trip (approximately a 4 hour drive) would cost you about $40 each way – $80 round trip! Ridesharing will help you save a bunch of money on your trip. It gets worse, however. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, "aggressive driving (speeding and rapid acceleration and braking) can lower your gas mileage by as much as 33% at highway speeds." Every 5 MPH over 60 MPH reduces your gas mileage by 7-8%. Without even realizing it, you'll end up paying over $120 in fuel for that road trip. On top of that, the cost of tolls can easily add another $30 or more to your trip costs. Opting to rideshare would easily allow you to split these costs betwen two, three, or four people. Offer a rideshare and split the cost of wear and tear on your vehicleAdditional costs of driving that are frequently overlooked are the wear and tear on your vehicle, maintenance, repairs, and tires. These can turn out to be very expensive, and will altogether cost you an average of 29.9 cents per mile. In the road trip example used earlier, this would end up costing you over $70 – each way! Rideshare with someone and avoid spending all this money. Rideshare is good for the environmentReduce your carbon footprint by offering a rideshareAccording to Carbon Trust, a "carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by a person, organisation, event or product." These greenhouse gases include Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous oxide (N2O), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). Carbon dioxide is the gas that is released from your car. A medium-sized vehicle emits an average of 6 tons of CO2 per year! (This costs nearly $90 to offset.) You can use this page to calculate the carbon dioxide emissions caused by driving.
